“Why Mask?” Campaign

The World Health Network (WHN) recognizes masking as one of the primary actions one can take to protect themselves and others from COVID-19 and other airborne pathogens and recommends masks with a protective power of an N95 or better. As the pandemic continues and the threat of COVID and other pathogens remain we must all continue masking as a means of individual infection protection and as an act of community care. The “Why Mask?” Campaign answers the question posed in its name, why mask, to make clear for those who aren’t masking the reasons why they should mask.

The goals of this campaign are to:

  • normalize, embrace, and empower masking
  • inspire people to continue masking with high quality respirators
  • educate the public about effectiveness of masking as infection prevention
  • grow awareness about masking as community care
  • highlight how masks can be used to show solidarity and self-expression

Key actions of the campaign include:

  • WHN Broadcast interviews
  • utilizing mask selfies to strengthen community solidarity around masking
  • creating posters, infographics, and images about masking that can be posted digitally or physically
  • social media message dissemination informing about the many benefits of masking
  • launching thought provoking blogposts
  • sharing mask distribution information through WHN’s Weekly Action Email
  • recognizing and amplifying work by individuals and organizations that encourages masking
  • promoting collaboration and allyship among individuals and organizations
  • sharing the benefits of masking beyond COVID infection prevention
  • fielding suggestions on additional actions build upon this campaign

Masking with a high quality respirator, like an N95, makes a major difference in preventing infection from airborne pathogens. Masks are also useful tools against allergens or wildfire smoke. Join us as we mask in solidarity together for a healthier future!
