Sunil Raina trained in Community Medicine at the post graduate level (MD) after completing his MBBS is the Professor & Head, department of Community Medicine, at Dr. RP Government Medical College, Tanda (Himachal Pradesh). He is also head of the Multi Disciplinary Research Unit as also the Director of the Centre for Advancing Tobacco Control in Himachal Pradesh (CATCH) – a Bloomberg-IUTLD funded initiative.
He is also Adjunct Professor, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Mangalore (Karnataka). In addition he also functions as the Program In charge for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), for training of mid-level health care professionals as also member postgraduate board of studies Atal Medical and Research University.
Dr. Sunil Raina has been and continues to be involved with Forty (40) funded research projects with funding by Global Fund, Bloomberg-IUTLD, Department of Health Research – Govt of India, Indian Council of Medical Research among others. Dr. Raina has more than three hundred and twenty (320) research publications in peer reviewed national and international journals to his credit including in Nature, Lancet and BMJ.
He was awarded the Lung India award for best paper in the year 2013 and the “Swasthya Neeti Samman” at Colombo Sri-Lanka in the year 2017 for his contribution to global health security. He received “Harcharan Singh Oration” for the year 2021-22, the highest award in public health in India. He is external reviewer for Research Grant Council Hongkong and Indian Council for Medical Research as also a part of the Covid Action Group – A multidisciplinary group of international experts on Covid-19.
Dr. Raina is expert-advisor to ICMR Centre for Non-communicable diseases. He is the chief editor of the Journal of Public health and primary care and the associate editor for Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.
He is the National Convener for Organized medicine Academic guild and member expert panel (GOI) on High Altitude Medicine and Socio-behavioural and implementation research. He was the mentor for One Health Hackathon, 2021 and continues to be associated with the World Health Network (WHN). As part of generating awareness on Covid-19, he has been a part of more than 150 television debates on National Channels.
