Right to Mask Campaign
The World Health Network (WHN)’s Right to Mask Campaign is an action and advocacy campaign with a focus on preserving everyone’s right to mask. Masking is one of the most effective means of infection prevention from airborne pathogens like COVID-19. As the pandemic continues and the threat of COVID and other pathogens remain, the right to mask must be preserved so that people can protect themselves and those around them from infection. The Right to Mask Campaign is about advocating against proposed mask bans in city and state legislatures in the United States, where they are most prominent, and globally. We are mobilizing people who value their health and safety to fight for the right to mask and against infringements on that right.
The goals of this campaign are to:
- protect everyone’s right to mask
- educate about the harm done by mask bans
- inspire people to continue masking with high quality respirators
- educate the public about effectiveness of masking as infection prevention
- highlight how masks can be used to show solidarity and self-expression
Key actions of the campaign include:
- helping people advocate for their right to mask
- phone banking to fight mask bans and relay information about the importance of masking
- sharing information and calls to action about “right to mask” issues through WHN’s Weekly Action Email
- recognizing and amplifying work by individuals and organizations that encourages masking
- promoting collaboration and allyship among individuals and organizations
- sharing the benefits of masking beyond COVID infection prevention
- fielding suggestions on additional actions to build upon this campaign
