Mask Week Is Here — Join the Movement to Normalize and Empower Masking

The World Health Network is proud to collaborate with Celebrate 845 in amplifying Mask Week, an advocacy and solidarity event that began in New York and is now reaching across state lines and international borders. Participating is simple. Wear a respirator and encourage others to do the same. This is an initiative that encourages masking, talking about masking, posting to social media about masking, and generally spreading information about the benefits of masking with a respirator.

While Celebrate 845 is focusing on New York communities, Mask Week is for everyone, everywhere. Whether you’re in California or Canada, Illinois or India, we invite individuals and organizations across the globe to participate and make this week a celebration of care, knowledge, and action.

Let’s see how big we can grow mask week!

Why Mask Week?

Masking matters. In a time of increasing airborne threats—from SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses to wildfire smoke, to seasonal flu and allergens like pollen—masks remain one of the simplest, most accessible tools for protecting yourself and those around you. But despite the clear benefits, stigma and misinformation continue to deter people from masking.

Participating in Mask Week is a small way to change that.

Here’s what it’s all about:

  1. Normalizing Masking
Masking is wise, not weird. Whether you’re commuting, grocery shopping, or attending a public event, wearing a mask helps prevent the spread of airborne illness and protects your respiratory health.
  2. Educating Others
When people see you wearing a mask during Mask Week, they might ask why. That’s your chance to share what you know: that masking reduces transmission of infectious diseases, filters out pollutants, and shields vulnerable individuals who depend on collective precautions.
  3. Embracing the Obvious
We don’t ask why people wear sunglasses in bright sunlight or seat belts in a car. Masking is just another practical step for everyday life. Let’s reassert and reestablish masking as a common sense choice for our own safety and the safety of those around us.
  4. Empowering Choice and Solidarity
Whether you’ve masked since early 2020, recently resumed masking, or are just now considering it, Mask Week welcomes you. It’s about now and the future, about choosing to care for yourself and your community, and standing in solidarity with those who depend on the safety masks provide.

No matter your reason—health, solidarity, habit, protection from smoke or pollen, or even self-expression—you belong in Mask Week.

How You Can Participate

  • Wear your mask proudly wherever you go this week.
  • Share your mask selfies as part of WHN’s Mask Selfies Initiative!
  • Share a selfie or photo of your masked moments on social media using hashtags like #MaskWeek, #MaskUp, or #WhyIMask.
  • Talk to others about the benefits of masking. Share articles, data, or your personal reasons for masking.
  • Join WHN and Celebrate 845 in celebrating a future where masking is seen as normal, thoughtful, and empowered.

Let’s Spread the Word, Not the Virus

Help us make Mask Week global. Tell your friends. Post online. Wear your mask. Every small action adds up to a bigger shift in how we think about public health, community care, and individual agency.

Together, we can change the story around masking. Not as a sign of fear or illness, but as a smart, strong, and supportive choice for all.

Mask up. Speak out. Celebrate Mask Week.
